On View Now at MAG: New Picasso Exhibition, Last Chance to Enjoy Frontiers of Impressionism, Rashid Johnson: The Hikers, and more

date
February 24, 2026

Rochester, NY, February 24, 2026— Visitors to the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) will experience dynamic moments across its galleries this winter, from an intimate examination of Picasso’s prints, a new video unveiling a beautiful, stirring story, to a landmark Impressionist exhibition entering its final days.

Picasso’s Prints
Picasso and the Progressive Proof: Linocuts from a Private Collection opened on February 14, and offers a close look at Pablo Picasso’s late-career innovations in printmaking. Presented in the Lockhart Gallery, the exhibition highlights three linocuts—Portrait of a Young Woman after Cranach the Younger II, Pique II, and Bacchanal with Kid Goat and Onlooker—alongside their various proofs. By tracing the evolution of each image, the exhibition reveals Picasso’s experimental process and his contributions to the medium. This exhibition will be on view now through June 21, 2026, and is sponsored by Roslyn and John Goldman, Sharon and Robert Napier, and the MAG Council, and organized by Townsend Art Advisory LLC. More information about the exhibition can be found here.

Last chance to enjoy Frontiers of Impressionism
At the same time, visitors have a last chance to view Frontiers of Impressionism: Paintings from the Worcester Art Museum, closing March 1, 2026. Featuring fifty-two paintings by more than thirty American and European artists—including Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Mary Cassatt, Childe Hassam, and John Singer Sargent—the exhibition reveals the radical, evolving spirit of the movement. Tracing its emergence in nineteenth-century France and its expansion across Europe and the United States, Frontiers of Impressionism highlights the bold experimentation that reshaped the course of modern art. More information about the soon-to-close exhibition can be found here.

New on view: Rashid Johnson: The Hikers
On view now through July 19, 2026, The Hikers (2019) by Rashid Johnson is a seven-minute poetic film that presents a chance encounter between two Black men hiking in the mountains of Aspen, Colorado. One ascending, the other descending, the masked men dance, and in an exquisite moment of recognition, remove their masks that manifest anxiety. What unfolds is a narrative of connection, an exchange of platonic love, and independence. Rashid Johnson (b.1977) is a leading contemporary American artist whose multidisciplinary practice—sculpture, painting, drawing, film, and installation—explores art history, cultural identity, and existential themes of anxiety, interiority, and resilience. More information about The Hikers can be found here.

New acquisitions on view in the galleries
Beyond special exhibitions, MAG continues to refresh its galleries with new works on view. Recently installed in the contemporary art galleries is Donald Moffett’s Lot 060825 (nature, cult, flood), an eye-catching mixed-media work that confronts themes of environmental instability. Acquired with support from the Marion Stratton Gould Fund, the work exemplifies MAG’s ongoing investment in significant contemporary voices.

Also on view in MAG’s recently reimagined contemporary galleries is Blue Zone by Hugo McCloud. This work features a laborer carrying a stack of boxes on his shoulder on a street of India. Exquisitely rendered with single-use plastic bags, the work is part of McCloud’s exploration of materials, processes, and subject matter.

As you explore MAG during your next visit, keep an eye out for even more new acquisitions on view throughout the galleries.
