Roberts Wesleyan University Expands Online Dual-Certification Master’s Program to Address Statewide Teacher Shortage
Rochester, N.Y. — As New York faces persistent teacher shortages, Roberts Wesleyan University has taken a significant step to expand access to teacher certification across the state. The University’s dual-certification Master of Education in Childhood or Adolescence and Special Education programs are now offered fully online.
Additionally, Roberts recently reduced the total credit hours required for degree completion, allowing students to graduate faster and begin teaching sooner, while maintaining rigorous academic and practical preparation.
“By offering this program fully online, we’re removing one of the biggest barriers to entering the profession: location,” said Dr. Adam Huck, Dean of the School of Education and Social Work at Roberts Wesleyan University. “We’re meeting future teachers where they are, so they can meet students where they are. Additionally, by reducing the total number of credit hours, we are addressing the financial barrier, too.”
A recent national analysis from Georgetown University’s Center on Education and the Workforce predicts the U.S. will face a shortfall of 5.3 million college-educated workers by 2032, including a deficit of more than 600,000 teachers. The report underscores an urgent need to prepare more credentialed educators, especially in high-demand subject areas and communities that struggle to attract certified teachers.
In New York specifically, many districts outside major metro areas continue to face difficulties filling classrooms in subjects like special education, math, and science.
The dual-certification structure of the M.Ed. program enables students to earn initial teacher certification in Childhood or Adolescence and Special Education (All Grades), broadening their impact and employability from the start.
Through virtual coursework, supervised field experiences, and mentorship from experienced faculty, students gain both the academic and practical preparation needed to enter the classroom confidently. Roberts’ approach reflects the university’s mission to prepare thoughtful, service-oriented leaders who transform their communities.
Roberts Wesleyan University offers two clear pathways for students to save on tuition: a 25% Corporate Partners Discount and a 25% Alumni Discount for this master’s degree. With either discount applied, tuition costs align competitively with those of state universities.
The mission of all teacher education programs at Roberts Wesleyan University, guided by its Christian traditions, is to prepare candidates to be highly capable educators who think critically, who educate diverse populations effectively, and who lead collaboratively toward a global and more just society.
