Breast Cancer Coalition Honors World Cancer Day and the Power of Storytelling
Rochester, NY – February 4th is World Cancer Day, an internationally-recognized day to honor those impacted by cancer that promotes awareness, people-centered care and the importance of telling stories. The day’s social media tag is #UnitedByUnique, informing communities that each person’s story of living with cancer is uniquely their own.
The Breast Cancer Coalition deeply aligns with the importance of storytelling. As an organization that serves those impacted by breast and gynecologic cancers, the Coalition aims to empower survivors through programming, participation as survivor-advocates in research and advocacy committees, and in contributing to Voices of the Ribbon, the organization’s free quarterly newsletter.
The very title of the newsletter represents the importance of the voices of those living with breast and gynecologic cancers – their voices, their stories.
Nicolette F. is a breast cancer survivor who recently contributed to Voices of the Ribbon. She wrote, “My AC (after cancer) life is going to be even more intentional, purposeful and celebratory than my BC (before cancer) life. I am grateful. … I didn’t think I would be the face of breast cancer, but here I am and here I stand.”
Lenora C. is an ovarian cancer survivor and recently reflected on how cancer has changed her life in Voices: “I think a lot has remained the same. I’m still me. … It’s just kind of helped me to recognize that life is a gift, and that we need to live it as best we can every single day.”
On February 4th, the Breast Cancer Coalition is proud to recognize World Cancer Day. Yet it is the Coalition’s objective – today and every day – to recognize how cancer impacts people’s lives. Through people-centered care and a dedication to uplifting personal narratives, the Coalition believes in the power of one’s unique story.
