Rochester, NY – On October 16, the Breast Cancer Coalition hosted its annual ACTober celebration, welcoming more than 250 guests at ARTISANworks and raising more than $150,000. With all funds staying local, this event focused on taking ACTion to support those impacted by breast and gynecologic cancers in Western and Central New York.

The evening's celebration included 53 sponsors, eight live auction items, more than 150 silent auction items, a $15,000 matching gift from Glover-Crask Charitable Trust during the paddle call, and a Cornell's Jewelers raffle.

Three local changemakers were also honored for their contributions to the breast and gynecologic cancer survivor community. Dr. Jan Dombrowski, Radiation Oncologist at University of Rochester Medical Center, and Dr. Nicole Rubin, Gynecologic Oncologist at Rochester Regional Health, were both honored with the Heart & Hands Award. Nominated by breast and gynecologic cancer patients directly, this award is presented to an outstanding oncology provider in the region who has prioritized empathy, kindness, and dedication to patient care.

Dr. Anna Weiss, Director of the Comprehensive Breast Care Program at Pluta, recently shared a few words about Dr. Dombrowski and his compassionate work, reflecting, “His steadfast dedication to our community has bettered the lives of countless breast cancer patients.”

Robbin Alexander, Practice Manager of Gynecologic Oncology at Rochester Regional Health, shared similar sentiments regarding Dr. Rubin, remarking, “Dr. Rubin is a compassionate and perceptive person. She’s dedicated to understanding the needs of the patients to provide superior care.”

Judith Epstein, Director of Grant and Foundation Development at the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation, was awarded the Advocate's Spirit Award. “For years, Judith has nurtured a relationship with the Breast Cancer Coalition and encourages young researchers to submit proposals for Coalition funding,” says Christina Thompson, Executive Director. “She helps to facilitate strong bonds with the research community and the Coalition by sharing the impact our grassroots grants can grow into.”

ACTober represents the importance of action in addition to awareness, because awareness is never enough. The Breast Cancer Coalition is dedicated to offering free programs and services to those diagnosed with breast or gynecologic cancer, while also funding innovative research and empowering survivor advocates to be leaders in the region. Taking action means serving a community of survivors, thrivers, and those who wish to see the eradication of breast and gynecologic cancers.
