As Housing Challenges Persist, VOA Invites Community to Take Steps Towards Ending Homelessness.
Rochester, NY – As housing affordability and homelessness continue to impact individuals and families across our region, VOA Upstate New York (Volunteers of America) invited the community to be part of the conversation and the solution with its first-ever Hike to End Homelessness.
Around 100 community members gathered at St. John Fisher University on Sunday, September 13 for a family-friendly community walk, which raised more than $10,000 to support programs and services that provide housing, education, health, and supportive services for individuals and families throughout Upstate New York facing housing instability. Those who were unable to attend in person were able to participate in a virtual walk option.
The truth is homelessness can happen to anyone. It could look like a missed paycheck, a medical emergency, or fleeing unsafe conditions. Many of families that are in need of housing support come to VOA for assistance due to situations out of their control.
“Most of us have the security of knowing where we'll sleep tonight. For many individuals and families in our community, that's not always the case,” said Dr. Junior Dillion, President and CEO, as he welcomed participants. “That’s where VOA comes in. We are here to help with a continuum of housing options to meet the needs of the communities we serve.”
Beyond providing shelter, VOA also provide on-site supportive services, connection to physical and mental health care, help residents find gainful employment, arrange for child care, and whatever other resources necessary to help the people VOA serves improve their overall well-being and stability.
