Breast Cancer Coalition Celebrates 23rd Annual Pink & Teal Challenge
Rochester, NY – Every year, the Breast Cancer Coalition hosts the Pink & Teal Challenge, a 5K walk & run that raises funds to support those affected by breast and gynecologic cancers in Western and Central New York. This year, it will be held on Saturday, May 10, at Monroe Community College. The Pink & Teal Challenge is the Coalition’s biggest event, in large part because of participants’ peer-to-peer fundraising and their day-of involvement as walkers or runners.
This year marks the Coalition’s 23rd year of hosting a walk & run. Locations have changed, and the event’s name has changed, but there have been a few constants from the beginning. One such example is Tina M., a local Rochesterian who has participated in the Coalition’s run every single year since the first event in 2002.
“This event honestly means so much to me,” shares Tina. “My friend who ran the very first race with me was later diagnosed with breast cancer. And in 2023, a good friend of mine was diagnosed with gynecologic cancer, so I ran in her honor. I keep having reasons for showing up.”
Last year, the Pink & Teal Challenge welcomed over 1,200 participants with a common goal: to support the breast and gynecologic cancer survivor community. The event honors those living with these cancers, pays tribute to those who have lost their battles but continue to inspire and instill hope, and encourages everyone to take action – one step at a time.
The Pink & Teal Challenge ensures that programs and services at the Breast Cancer Coalition will always be free of charge to survivors at any time. Every dollar raised stays local, so each participant knows where their donation goes and the impact it has.
For those who are curious about joining, there is a 5k loop for runners and walkers, or a 2-mile loop for walkers as well. Participants are often dressed in pink and teal or wear costumes with their teammates – there are best individual and best group costume prizes awarded at the end of the event!
