Fundraising event: Unidos for a Cause

ROCHESTER, NY (October 10, 2022) Puerto Ricans United in the Distance, Unidos en la distancia, is hosting a special event to raise funds and collaborate with those in critical devastation in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Fiona. The fundraising event will take place this Sunday, October 16 from 2:30 - 9:00 pm, at the Avalon, located at 470 State Street.

The event will feature Latinx food, family and children activities, and live performances by Borinquen Dance Theatre, Arigani, Ted the Juggler, Orquesta Antonetti, Banda Light, La Nueva Secuencia, and more. The fundraiser includes community leader’s bartending for the Pour for the Island, raffles, and a silent auction. The Ibero-American Action League and PR United in the distance invites the community to join in solidarity to support those on the Island and arriving families already landing in Rochester.

“We must be prepared as this has been a long journey for many Puerto Ricans, many who had not fully recovered, and might have lost whatever they had left” said Angelica Perez-Delgado, president, and CEO of Ibero.

All monies raised will support Team Cuca Foundation, a nonprofit on the island working directly with families affected by the hurricane. Hurricane Fiona, made landfall with over 30 inches of rain, leaving communities underwater, bridges and roads destroyed, and many residents homes unlivable. The Hurricane also damaged 50% of the already vulnerable electrical grid. According to news reports over 100,000 of families remain without power or water service, and 25 people may have died as a direct or indirect result of the storm.

“Our community is resilient and by unifying our strength and support, we promote the message that, regardless of the distance, we stand in solidarity.” said Irene Sanchez, Founder of PR United in the Distance

The Ibero-American Action League is grateful for the contributions and supplies received to support local efforts and extends the invitation for the community to join Unidos for a Cause and engage with relief actions in place.
