PwC in Rochester: Local presence, relationships, impact

Guest post from Greater Rochester Chamber member Brian Sabedra, Office Managing Partner, PwC Rochester

Rochester has always been a region of builders. Decades of investment in advanced manufacturing, healthcare, higher education, and technology have produced an economy that is more resilient and more dynamic than it often gets credit for. That foundation is evolving rapidly, with semiconductors, photonics, and life sciences drawing new capital and the region’s universities continuing to produce talent that stays and builds here. The questions business leaders are navigating in this environment are serious ones, and the stakes of getting them right are high.

I have been leading PwC’s Rochester office for several years, and what stands out most about Rochester is how often its complexity is underestimated. A regional health system managing a major transaction, a mid-sized manufacturer rethinking its supply chain in response to trade shifts, a university navigating evolving compliance requirements, a technology company scaling rapidly on cloud infrastructure: these are not simple problems. They require deep expertise, sound judgment, and teams that understand the business context, not just the technical question.

PwC is a tech-forward, people-empowered network with more than 364,000 people across 136 countries and 137 territories. That global reach matters in Rochester because our clients here rarely face problems that are purely local. Tax strategy, regulatory exposure, technology risk, and deal activity all have dimensions that extend well beyond any single market. Our Rochester team draws on the full depth of the firm while staying grounded in the relationships and context that make advice actually useful.

Our growth in the region reflects that commitment. The 2020 acquisition of EagleDream Technologies, a Rochester-founded cloud-native firm and Premier Consulting Partner in the Amazon Web Services Partner Network, was not just an expansion of our technology capabilities. It brought into our team professionals who had spent years working alongside Rochester businesses on some of their most consequential infrastructure decisions. That kind of embedded knowledge is not easy to build, and it is central to how we work.

Middle-market companies and institutions are where advisory work is often most meaningful. The decisions are high-stakes, leadership teams are close to the work, and there is real appetite for clear thinking over generic frameworks. That is the environment where our people develop their strongest skills and do some of their most consequential work. Our investment in Rochester, including a new 10-year home at Highpoint Business Park designed specifically to support how our teams and clients work together, reflects how central this market is to what we are building as a firm.

We recruit year-round and train our people through an apprenticeship model that emphasizes learning in the flow of real work, while giving them tools to build careers that are not defined by geography. Someone based in Rochester can lead work for clients anywhere. That flexibility has made Rochester a stronger talent market for us over time, and it means our clients here are consistently working with professionals who chose to be here and who are invested in the region’s trajectory.

Presence in a community means more than having an office. Our team is active in the Greater Rochester Chamber and involved with local nonprofits and civic organizations. We see that engagement as part of the work, not separate from it. The same applies to how we think about this region’s future. When Rochester grows, so do the challenges and opportunities that our clients bring to us. That is what long-term commitment to Rochester looks like in practice.
