Breast Cancer Coalition Announces Webinar on Cancer Genetics
Rochester, NY – Each month, the Breast Cancer Coalition hosts a webinar as part of the organization’s Evening Education Webinar Series. Focusing on a variety of topics related to health and wellness, the webinars are free and open to the public. On Wednesday, June 24 at 7:00 PM, join Kim Provenzano, NP, for “Cancer Genetics: What We Do and Don’t Know.”
Provenzano, an experienced nurse practitioner at Rochester Regional Health with over 25 years of clinical expertise, will present an easy-to-understand talk about cancer genetics. "Genetic testing continues to transform the care of cancer patients and their families but sometimes raises many questions,” said Provenzano. “We now know more than ever about inherited cancer risk, yet important gaps in knowledge remain. My hope is to explore both sides of that reality and empower people with up-to-date, practical information about cancer genetics so they can make informed decisions – understanding that knowledge, when used thoughtfully, can reduce fear, foster understanding, and support confident healthcare decisions.”
In the webinar, Provenzano will explain what genes are, what genetic testing involves, and how some changes in genes can raise the risk for certain cancers. She will also explain why most cancers are not caused by inherited genes.
The webinar will clarify what genetic testing can and cannot tell a patient, who might benefit from genetic testing, how family history affects cancer risk, and how results can help with health decisions. It is designed for patients, survivors, caregivers, providers, and anyone who wants to learn more about genetic testing. Participants will leave with clear information to help make more informed choices about their health.
The Evening Educational Webinar Series is generously supported by the Lee C. Rosenthal Memorial Education Fund. ASL interpretation will be provided during the webinar. The 90-minute session will include at least 30 minutes for questions at the end. Register today at https://bccr.org/evening-education-webinars/ and submit questions in advance to rachel@bccr.org.
